How Many 600x600 Slabs Are in a Square Metre?

At Creations Building & Landscaping, this is one of the simplest patio-planning questions we get asked. A 600x600 slab covers 0.36 square metres, so 1 square metre needs 2.78 slabs. In real terms, that means we usually work on roughly 3 slabs per square metre when planning a paved area.

The quick calculation
A 600x600 slab measures 0.6m x 0.6m. Multiply those together and each slab covers 0.36m². Then divide 1m² by 0.36m², which gives 2.78 slabs.
What that means in practice
For a simple square metre, you cannot buy 0.78 of a slab, so the practical answer is usually 3 slabs per square metre, especially once you allow for cuts around edges and the way a patio is laid out. The exact number needed across a full garden depends on the shape of the area, the pattern, and any borders or features built into the design. That is one reason we always measure properly before pricing any paving project.
Why slab numbers are only part of the job
A good patio is not just about counting slabs. On our Paving page, we explain that the finished result also depends on the groundwork, sub-base, drainage, edging and accurate laying. We install patios, paths and paved spaces across Surrey using a range of materials, including porcelain, natural stone and block paving, and we build each one to handle daily use and changing weather.
