Most homeowners ask the same question when they start planning a new garden: how much is this going to cost? It's the right question, but the answers online can feel vague or wildly inconsistent. We quote landscaping jobs across Surrey every week, and we know the prices that actually stick. Here's what landscaping really costs in the UK, what shifts the number up or down, and how to spot a quote you can trust.
A quick note on location before we get into the numbers. Prices vary by region. We can't speak to landscaping in Melbourne, but for landscaping in Reigate and across Surrey, the figures below match what we see on real jobs.

What is the average cost of landscaping in the UK?
Landscaping in the UK typically costs between £3,000 for a small garden refresh and £70,000 or more for a complete bespoke redesign. Most full garden projects we quote land between £10,000 and £30,000. The final figure depends on garden size, material choices, ground conditions, access, and how much hard landscaping is in the design versus planting.
What affects the cost of landscaping?
No two gardens cost the same. We've seen identical-looking briefs come in £15,000 apart once we've walked the site. Here are the main factors that move the number:
Garden size. Square metres are the starting point for almost every line on a quote. Bigger gardens mean more materials, more groundwork, more time.
Site access. A back garden with a narrow side gate means barrowing every bag of muck and every paver through by hand. That adds days, sometimes weeks, of labour.
Ground conditions. Clay-heavy soil, hidden rubble, old concrete bases, tree roots, or a high water table all add to groundworks. We always factor this in once we've seen the site.
Materials. Indian sandstone versus porcelain versus block paving can double or triple the cost per square metre. Timber decking versus composite is a similar gap.
Hard versus soft landscaping. Paving, walls, steps, and structures cost more per square metre than turf, planting, and beds. A design that's 70% hard surface costs far more than one that's mostly lawn.
Drainage and levels. Sloping gardens that need terracing, retaining walls, or new drainage can add £5,000 or more on their own.
Region. London and the South East run noticeably higher than the North or Midlands. Surrey sits in the higher bracket nationally.
Landscaping cost by job type
If you're only doing part of the garden, costs are easier to pin down. Here's what individual jobs typically run in the UK in 2026.
Patio installation cost
Expect to pay roughly £80 to £200 per square metre installed, depending on the paving. Block paving and standard Indian sandstone sit at the lower end. Porcelain, natural stone, and bespoke designs with bordering or feature inlays sit higher. A 30m² patio in mid-range porcelain typically lands between £4,500 and £6,500.
Turfing and lawns
Supplying and laying fresh turf usually runs £15 to £30 per square metre, including ground prep. Artificial grass costs more, generally £60 to £120 per square metre installed, because of the sub-base work and edging. Artificial looks lower maintenance on paper, but the upfront price reflects the labour to do it properly.
Fencing
Closeboard or feather-edge fencing installed comes in around £40 to £100 per linear metre, depending on height, posts (concrete versus timber), and finish. Hardwood or designer fencing pushes higher. Replacement panels alone are cheaper if your posts are sound.
Decking
Timber decking is roughly £100 to £180 per square metre installed. Composite decking, which lasts longer and needs less upkeep, runs £150 to £250 per square metre. The substructure underneath, plus any steps or balustrades, are what push composite costs up.
Driveways and paths
Block-paved driveways usually cost £80 to £150 per square metre installed. Resin-bound surfaces and natural stone paths run higher. Any driveway over five square metres needs to be permeable or have proper drainage to meet planning rules.
Landscaping cost by garden size
For full garden projects, here's a rough guide to what you'd budget for a complete transformation in 2026:
Small garden (up to 50m²): £3,000 to £10,000 for a refresh; £10,000 to £20,000 for a full redesign
Medium garden (50-150m²): £10,000 to £25,000 for a tidy and partial rebuild; £25,000 to £50,000 for a full design and build
Large garden (150m²+): £30,000 to £70,000 for a full redesign; £100,000+ for high-spec projects with structures, lighting, and bespoke planting
These are honest ballpark figures, not promises. The only number that matters in the end is the one on a written quote for your specific garden.
How to spot a fair landscaping quote
Cheap quotes are rarely cheap by the end. We've been called in to fix more "bargain" jobs than we can count. A fair, trustworthy quote should:
Itemise materials, labour, and any plant or skip hire separately
Specify the products by name and brand, not just "porcelain" or "paving"
Include a payment schedule rather than asking for a big lump sum up front
Be in writing, signed, with clear start and finish dates
If you're not sure whether a quote stacks up, Citizens Advice has practical guidance on what to check before agreeing to building work. Always get at least two written quotes for any project over £5,000.
Why two gardens of the same size cost different amounts
We've quoted two semi-detached houses on the same road with near-identical gardens. One came in at £18,000, the other at £28,000. The difference was access (one had side gate access, the other meant going through the kitchen), ground conditions (one had an old shed base full of buried rubble), and the homeowner's material choice. Same square metres, very different final cost.
This is why we always visit the site before quoting. Anyone giving you a final price over the phone without seeing the garden is guessing, and that's how nasty surprises happen halfway through the build.
